Who Are We?

The Milton Keynes Hard of Hearing Group supports people with a hearing impairment. The group was formed approximately 5 years ago and is now a Community Interest organisation with charitable status.

The group supports people with all forms of hearing impairment including mild, moderate, profound hearing loss and dual sensory loss.  They also welcome people with Tinnitus, Menieres and pre/post cochlear implants.

Their aim is to alleviate isolation, offer support, friendship and signpost to relevant services within Milton Keynes.

The group work closely with statutory organisations such as Milton Keynes Council, the Audiology Department and the Adult Hearing Service. Other statutory groups such as the MK Clinical Commissioning Group consult the Hard of Hearing group when making changes to the Adult Hearing Services.

They also work with voluntary sector organisations such as Access Ambassadors CIC and represent groups such as MK Deaf Zone at the Disability Advisory Group. They actively support campaigns for improved accessibility at venues such as the shopping centres and the local cinema.

OThe group has approximately 16 regular members. Some members do move on as they become more confident and independent. New members are always welcome to join their meetings.

What Activities do they have?

The group meets twice monthly on the first and third Tuesday of the month from 10.30-12.00 noon at the Centre for Integrated Living.

The first monthly meeting takes the form of a presentation from outside organisations relevant to hearing loss. These presentations prove to be both informative and interesting. They provide a great opportunity for finding out more. Presenters always welcome the questions and answers session at the end of the presentations.

The third Tuesday each month is a more relaxed coffee morning where friendships are formed and experiences shared. They also use these sessions to keep up to date with local disability issues.

In previous years, the group has arranged visits to places of interest such as Bletchley Park. Other trips have included visiting The Houses of Parliament using Community Transport.

Their most recent outing was to the Shuttleworth Collection at Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. The trip was partly funded by Campbell Park Parish Council and enjoyed by all members of the group.

If you would like to attend the group but have mobility issues or cannot access public transport, then taxi fares may be reimbursed on production of a receipt. Please note that funds are limited, so contact the group leader, to check fares will be reimbursed.  If you would like to join this diverse and very lively group please contact Ros Bloor on MK 01908 678472 or email: [email protected] A warm welcome awaits you!
